Redbush algae, also known as Gracilaria Hayi, is a perfect source of food for fish such as Angelfish, Tangs, and snails. It also works to absorb nitrates from your tank and is reef safe. It’s bright fluorescent red colors make a beautiful addition to your tank or refugium. Red Gracilaria Algae is a very hardy macroalga that helps to remove toxins from your tank and grows fairly fast. It is a natural way to improve the water quality in your aquarium. A very desirable alga as it grows quite large, e.g., 18 inches (45 cm), and forms broad reddish branching growths from a central rhizome with its tips split into uneven ruffles. Requires strong light and moderate currents, and well-balanced calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels that duplicate natural seawater.
Gracilaria algae may also be grown in the invertebrate or reef aquarium as long as the algae is not disturbed by fish or invertebrates. Anchor the algae between the rockwork of the aquarium, and the algae will take root and start to grow if it is given proper lighting and water conditions. Provide moderate flow and lighting with the supplement of Iron, Magnesium, and Trace elements. High levels of phosphates or nitrates will inhibit the growth of these algae. Red Bush Gracilaria Algae is a beautiful species of red gracilaria features rigid, irregularly shaped branches that form a tight symmetrical bush. It is lightly calcified, so the addition of calcium is recommended. Due to its lightly calcified branches, it’s not known to be very palatable to fish or invertebrates.
